Overview

Our Unit Coordinator provides overall direction and supervision of the designated special mental health units. This individual provides clinical and administrative oversight and direction to The Company staff assigned to the unit; ensures appropriate professional training; and coordinates clinical supervision with the appropriate The Company authority. This individual works cooperatively with client personnel and maintains accountability for all services performed by The Company staff. This individual also ensures the provision of necessary services, the appropriate documentation of these services and the on-going monitoring of the quality of these services.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Masters Degree in a Clinical Healthcare related area

Experience:

  • Five (5) years of experience in a psychiatric acute care setting with similar responsibilities.
  • Correctional experience preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • LMSW, LPC, or similar licensure as required by Massachusetts.
  • Current CPR Certification.

Responsibilities

  1. Responsible to plan, supervise, and coordinate the efforts of mental health services’ staff at the program level as directed by the Mental Health Director, State Mental Health Director, and Health Services Administrator.
  2. Responsible for the administrative direction, professional education, and staff development of health and mental health professionals within the program and for training new staff and update trainings for current staff. Will organize specific clinical training as needed.
  3. Responsible for monitoring the admission and discharge process and ensuring compliance with policy. Serves as primary point of contact for The Company for referral source and receiving facilities.
  4. Ensures daily functions of the special mental health units are covered by appropriate staff and occur as per unit schedule.
  5. Ensures cooperative efforts with designated client counterpart. Ensures issues impacting client are brought to client in a timely manner, and addresses issues impacting The Company in a timely manner.
  6. Ensures the unit schedule is appropriate and updated on a regular basis. Works with staff to develop and introduce new topics when clinically indicated. Ensures the availability of a diverse range of groups to enhance the clinical program for the patients.
  7. Ensures policies and procedures related to the unit are followed.
  8. Responsible to provide oversight of the Quality Improvement program for mental health (in particular specialized services offered in the unit) services within the program. Ensures that program evaluation activities occur as scheduled. Develops and monitors CQI related Improvement Plans as indicated.
  9. Responsible to represent the interests of the special mental health unit program in order to facilitate multidisciplinary cooperation in the delivery of mental health services.
  10. Provision of overall administrative supervision and direction to mental health professionals within the program, ensuring that relevant ethical and professional standards of care are met. Ensures supervision needs are met by qualified professionals through individual and small group supervision, consultation, case presentations, or other forms of peer supervision.
  11. Ensures all aspects of the The Company program function according to policy and procedure and relevant professional standards.
  12. Assists in reviewing transfers to the special mental health unit for appropriateness and clinical necessity, and informs Mental Health Director and State Mental Health Director of pending admissions and discharges. Communicates information to client designee for unit.
  13. Assigns specific duties and clinical responsibilities to mental health staff in accordance with their position description, education and training. Notifies State Mental Health Director of staff’s inability to perform such duties and responsibilities in a competent, ethical and professional manner.
  14. Ensures treatment planning for patients occurs on a regular basis and according to policy. Coordinate any case planning meetings, unit treatment team meetings and case reviews with other teams with the client.
  15. Ensures all administrative personnel functions are managed according to The Company policies and procedures.
  16. Coordinate Quality Improvement program, including dissemination of monthly screens, review of completed screens, and development of Improvement Plans for areas in which improvement is needed.
  17. Responsible for providing all statistical information required to site Mental Health Director and state Mental Health Director on a monthly basis and to Regional Office upon request.
  18. Serve as the unit representative for The Company for meetings occurring within the facility and in the community.
  19. Provide oversight of The Company staff documentation in the health record of clinical services provided to patients. Oversight includes periodic chart reviews and provision of in-services to staff on aspects of documentation of health care.
  20. Coordinate the provision of in-service opportunities to mental health services staff to ensure compliance with professional education requirements and professional standards. Maintain documentation of in-service received by staff.
  21. Under direction of the Health Services Administrator and state Mental Health Director, develop and implement goals and objectives for services provided at the special mental health unit Assist in the development and refinement of facility policies and procedures to ensure that these meet not only recognized standards, but also the institution’s General Orders.
  22. Ensures recruiting efforts in the event of staff vacancies are managed, including but not limited to, contacting candidates, scheduling interviews and ensures the appropriate staff participates in the interview process.
  23. Provide supervision of clerical support staff to ensure that the mental health records and departmental files are maintained properly.
  24. Provides direct clinical direction within the scope of practice of the Unit Coordinator. Arranges for oversight coverage if scope of practice does not allow for clinical supervision of some professionals.
  25. Provide timely notification to the Health Services Administrator and state Mental Health Director of clinical concerns which may impact an individual patient or the Residential Treatment Program.
  26. Coordinate training of facility staff, including security, regarding mental health and health care issues.
  27. Compliance with employee standards of client. Compliance includes, but is not limited to, the maintenance of a working environment and personal appearance consistent with professional responsibilities, development of harmonious working relationships, and timely notification of supervisory personnel of absences from institution.
  28. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  29. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  30. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
  31. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
  32. Perform other duties as assigned.
